Periodontitis

THERAPY AND COUNSELING

We take periodontitis seriously and of course we offer our patients appropriate periodontitis therapy. After all, progressive gum disease is the harbinger of serious dental problems and must be treated. But there is not only the threat of tooth loss. Bacterial periodontitis can be the cause of further complaints and health risks throughout the body.

Do you have bleeding gums and suspect a slight recession of your gums? Then you should talk to your dentist. Good therapy and long-term care from professional practitioners is the right thing to do. Get proper advice on how to optimize your oral hygiene at home.

WHAT IS PERIODONTITIS ?

Periodontitis is a serious inflammation of the gums, which is caused by bacteria if dental care is inadequate and results in a gradual irreversible decline of the gums and jaw bone. Periodontitis develops over years and remains symptom-free up to a certain degree. With good oral hygiene, the typical bleeding of the gums often does not occur and you have hardly any complaints. Since the regression of the gums is gradual, it is often only noticed late by the affected patients themselves.

PERIODONTITIS DESPITE TOOTH BRUSHING?

In hard-to-reach places, home oral hygiene is often not sufficient to prevent the formation of plaque. In particular, the interdental spaces can only actually be reached with dental floss. Despite brushing, dangerous bacteria very often concentrate in these places, which can trigger periodontitis. As the gums become inflamed, they begin to recede and bacteria-rich plaque and food debris are pushed deeper and deeper into the gum pockets by continuous dental care. The disease takes its course.

COURSE OF UNTREATED PERIODONTITIS WITH LATE CONSEQUENCES

In the specific example, advanced periodontitis was diagnosed in a female patient before the age of 30 in 2011. Unfortunately, treatment was not desired despite the serious diagnosis. The significant decrease in jaw substance between 2011 and 2013 is very clearly visible (cf. Fig. 1 & Fig. 2). In 2013, all teeth had to be removed and the patient now wears implant-supported dentures.

HIDDEN RISKS OF PERIODONTITIS

Numerous studies show that periodontal disease significantly increases the risk of secondary disease. For example, due to the typical bleeding gums, dangerous periodontitis bacteria enter the bloodstream and can trigger health problems in other parts of the body.

For example, untreated periodontitis increases the risk of diabetes by up to 11 times. But also a double risk of heart attack or pregnancy are reason enough to fight the cause.

Regular prophylaxis or laser treatment in the current treatment case reduce the concentration of germs and are an important part of comprehensive preventive care - not only for the teeth!
